Here are some advice, tips, and explanations to help guide you through the maze of college acronyms and terms that will become like a second language as your student prepares for college. The Basics of the College Admissions Process FAFSA It’s the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a form that the federal government, states, colleges, and other organizations use to award financial aid. Simply put, it’s an application, and you need to fill it out and submit it to see if your students qualifies for grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and federal student loans. Even if you don’t think you qualify for aid, you should still fill it out. You need to know your income and have your tax returns handy to fill out this form. When you complete it, FAFSA sends it back to you with you a number. That number is†¦ Your EFC EFC is Expected Family Contribution, which is a number that colleges use to determine how much financial aid your student can receive. Your EFC number almost may give you a heart attack, because it’s probably not what you are capable of paying for your student’s college education. You’re not alone having EFC shock. Don’t fear. Ways exist to pay for college other than from your own bank account or retirement savings. You do not have to fall below the poverty line or have a scientific genius kid with a 1600 SAT and a 6.0 GPA to get help paying for college. Know Your College Budget Most of us have monetary limits, and check on your finances – regardless of how much or how little you have – when your child starts applying for college. Since you will need to know your income for the FAFSA form, talk to your child about your family finances and college costs. Don’t keep it a secret. Children need to know because their future will be affected by it. You should also tell them it’s not smart to get monstrous loans, which could ruin any chance you have for retirement. Maybe you think you can afford a $40,000 loan this year for your child’s first year of college. Spoiler Alert: You will have three more years of this same loan or more. Four years equal $180,000 excluding interest. Many times people’s credit and the debt-to-income ratio craters in the third year of college. What could potentially happen then? Your student has to drop out, and youre paying back $80,000 without your child having a degree. Researching Colleges That’s why you have to research, and you have start now. When you research, have realistic expectations about what you can afford and your student’s needs now and in the future. You will sign up for lots of information, newsletters, and college updates. You should create a throwaway email account for all the messages you’ll receive when you register at all the websites when you start your research. Create a plan for researching taking into account your finances and your child’s goals – academics, social, sports, Greek life, etc. Know The Basics of Student Loans Does your child want to be a teacher or a social worker? A doctor or a lawyer? The first two have low salary expectations. The last two have expensive post-graduate requirements. All four are similar though. You don’t want to spend $70,000 a year on a career that only will pay $30,000 a year. Equally, don’t spend $70,000 a year on an undergraduate degree if you know you will pay another $200,000 for advance degrees. Most students cannot get loans to pay for a $70,000 a year school. Or a $50,000 school. Or even a $20,000 school. The limit, by law, is a $5,500 government student loan. (This amount increases slightly each year). You will have a hard time finding a private bank that will lend money to a student without a co-signer. Guess who is the co-signer? You. Do you know what that means? You are on the hook if Junior defaults. College Application Fees Many parents think that their student should apply to every college and â€Å"let’s see what they give us.† No. Don’t. This is not a college plan. Sure, your child’s dream school may be Ivy League and sound glamorous, but if you can’t afford it or your child doesn’t have tip-top grades that could lead to needs-based scholarships, why apply? Every time your student applies for a college, there is an application fee. These add up quickly. Save a lot of money. Make a list of 10-15 colleges and focus on these. Reality Bites Yeah, it can. Here’s a scenario. It’s August. You have been denied loans because your credit is bad. You may have no relatives to help you put your child through college. You may be barely able to buy groceries. Your child may have been accepted to a college that you cannot afford, and they are preparing to go there in just a few weeks. You don’t know how to break it to your child, but you can’t afford it. Don’t get yourself into this situation. You must be realistic and honest with your child from the start of the college planning process. It sucks. It’s hard. But you have to do it. The College Admission Process is Overwhelming! Help! Here are some quick tips to start planning. The college search finder at Collegeboard.org will become your best friend. You can find majors, geography, school size and many other topics to help narrow your college search. Research schools where your kid’s abilities look outstanding whether at an expensive, out-of-state school or one that may be down the street from you. They may not be exactly what your student had in mind, but a lot of variables have to be factored in. In fact, they may be your child’s dream school, and they just don’t know it yet. The better your child’s data is in comparison with the average student, the more money available for education. Some public state universities (PSUs) offer impressive financial aid to out-of-state (OSS) students. Some don’t. The same is true for private colleges. Don’t assume you can’t afford one. Find two or three schools that are sure-things, â€Å"safeties, where your student can easily attend and be happy there. You will want to visit some of these schools to make sure your child likes what the campus offers, but it is not necessary to visit them all. In fact, there is a lot your student can learn from a colleges website. These colleges also should be â€Å"financial† safeties, schools you can pay for with the expected financial/merit aid you will receive or with very small loans. Often, these are public universities in your state, or even community colleges, which are amazing bargains and the perfect fit for your student. Approximately a year ago, I began volunteering for the Denver Dumb Friends League at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. A shelter is not always the easiest place to work. Nevertheless, I feel it is where I feel most able to make a difference. There is plenty of heartache, but I seem to have a knack for calming and comforting the frightened animals, and that makes me feel good. The protagonist, the Grandfather, has similarities in his opinions to that of Lessing’s own. Which is that marriage is for when you are ready to give up on a life of your own. Compass and Torch, by Elizabeth Baines, is the story of a camping trip between a young boy and his father. The pair have not spent time alo ne together since the father’s divorce from the boy’s mother, a year earlier. Their relationship has been damaged by their estrangement which they both are trying to repair, although they are not capable of it in just one night. The primary character of the story is the boy, with the majority of the story being told from his perspective. Both of the authors use characterisation as a method to portray the theme of growing up. In Flight, the grandfather is upset at his youngest granddaughter’s longing to grow up and move out, it is shown in this quote from his internal monologue ‘now the house would be empty, gone all the young girls with their laughter and their squabbling and their teasing. He would be left, uncherished and alone. He feels abandoned by her, he is the only mentioned male family member and it assumed that he is the father figure to his grandchildren. His perspective is from a person left behind by the person growing up rather than the person who is growing up, which is less common in fiction. By the end of the story the grandfather has become more accepting of the change, which is illustrated by his release of the pigeons. The boy in Compass and Torch is the focus of Bainesâ€℠¢s story. He is eight years old and trying to act like a grown man. He is striving to convince his father and himself that he is a man and equal. ‘In which he and his father will be two men’ is just one example of his determination to be seen as a man. The attempt at equality is his way of adjusting to his changed relationship with his father. In contrast when he is at home with his mother he acts the most mature, especially with his stepfather Jim, ‘‘Yes’ said the boy, forcing himself to acknowledge Jim’s kindness and affirmation. ’ is a example of the boy showing a surprising amount of maturity for an eight year old. Differing from Flight, the boy does not have a epiphany at the end of the story and it is assumed he will continue his attempts at maturity when he wakes. The language style varies in the two pieces. In Compass and Torch, Baines switches the narrative between the view points of her characters, mostly from the perspective of the boy but with brief insights into what the father is thinking and occasionally the horses. In Flight, Lessing writes from the outlook of the Grandfather, with the entirety of the story filled with his actions and thoughts. This fits with the aims of the two pieces, Flight being about the grandfathers opinions and emotional journey, in contrast, Compass and Torch is about the changed relationship between the two individuals, so the switching narrative fits with the theme of story. Both of the writers use very evocative imagery in the stories. In Compass and Torch, ‘Beyond the gate is the open moor, pale in the early evening with bleached end-of-summer grass, bruised here and there with heather and ge-old spills of purple granite’ is the first example of many suggestive descriptions that conjure images of the dark rugged terrain, it is not a coincidence that the description fits with the Snowdonia mountains in Baines’s native Wales. She uses the wilds as a metaphor for the uncharted terrain the man and boy are negotiating in their new relationship, in contrast to the stable and homely setting when the boy is at home with his mother. Similarly, Flight has very a descriptive setting but with much bolder and brighter colours than the dark greys and greens of Compass and Torch. The dark red soil’, ‘a stream of rich green grass’ and ’the pink flowers’ all set a bright and idyllic tone to the railway cottage and surrounding land where the story is set. Lessing’s metaphor is different to Baines’s, Lessing’s colourful home represents the childhood and innocence of the granddaughter. It’s isolated location adding to the image of safety against the intrusion of the outside world, its maturity and corrupting influence. Baines’s use’s her control of information in the Compass and Torch much more than Lessing. In Flight, the only glaring lack of information is the fate of the Grandfather and his daughters respective spouses. There is no mention implied or otherwise of the former‘s wife. ‘I was married at seventeen and I never regretted it (said his daughter), Liar’ he said. ‘Liar. Then you should regret it,’ implies that the daughter’s was an unhappy marriage in the eyes of the Grandfather or at least she was too young and he wishes his granddaughter could avoid her mistake. If the writer had included what had happened, we might sympathise with either the Grandfather or his daughter but it is left out, as it is not a story about fact, it is a story about the Grandfather’s feelings and that would distract from the point. Baines is much stricter with what information she gives the reader, but there is a very clear aim to her lack of detail. The only name we are given is that of Jim the step dad, the members of the family are nameless. The divorce details are left out. The reason why the dad has been absent and his current relationship status is unknown. All of this undefined detail creates the ability for the reader to relate to the story easier and attach their own experiences. In one instance, a fellow student found herself empathising with the mother, who is not the warmest of the characters, as she knows how she feels when allowing her own child to visit her father. This was Baines’s aim, the fact that the dad is the very archetype of the strong male character type and the boy, a very familiar personality to anyone with experience of eight year old boys trying to impress someone, all help the story be more accessible to the reader. There are recurring patterns running throughout both of the pieces, which the authors use to tie in their themes of growing up. The pigeons in Flight are a metaphor for the grandfather trying to control and protect his granddaughter, ‘feeling the cold coral claws tighten around his finger. Content, he rested the bird lightly on his chest,’ shows he was happiest when his granddaughter is holding on to him as tightly as he was holding her, but now the relationship has changed and he’s holding on to her alone. At the end of the story when he release the pigeons, it is his way of symbolising his reluctant acceptance of her leaving. All though ‘She was staring at him’ and ‘He saw the tears run shivering off her face’ indicates that now that he has let her go and she is free to pursue her adulthood, she is frightened to go on without him. Lessing turns the tables there, showing the other side that the girls desire for independence is not all she thought it was going to be. In Compass and Torch, the pattern is the recurring interference of the horses. They are totems for the mistakes the boy and the man are making. The dad is in so much pain and scared that he is losing his son that he is ignoring his son’s attempts at bonding, its shown in the line ’the horse comes up to the car,’ ‘The man bats her away,’ he repeatedly ignores the horse like he ignores his son. The boy has a different problem, he is so obsessed at being a man like his dad that he forgets to be a child, ‘(the horse) provides a close up display that could easily fascinate an eight-year-old boy’ which the boy ignores ‘eyes only for the man. The horses show that the man is the one who needs to grow up, stop wallowing in self pity and try and connect with his son, that way the son will be able to stop trying to be a man and enjoy his childhood which is surely what the dad would prefer. Growing up is explored from two very different perspectives in the stories, both deal with accepting the reality of the situation ra ther then what the characters would prefer. He knew that chemotherapy had killed his healthy cells along with his mutated ones. His bones were weak, his hairs were coming off, and his spirit was fading. One day, John sneaked into the hospital with an ounce of marijuana. His uncle was hesitant at first but the torturous power of the chemotherapy was too strong. Within a week, this pale and bald man transformed into this pale and bald man with spirit. For the next two months, he had to worry about being caught with something that made his life worth living. From that moment, I knew that marijuana was not the devil that the government projected it to be. Our country's war on drugs places great emphasis on arresting people for smoking marijuana. During President Clinton's administration, approximately 2.8 million Americans have been arrested for marijuana offenses. In 1997 alone, state and local law enforcement arrested 695,200 people for marijuana violations. The 1997, yearly arrest total for marijuana violations is the highest ever recorded by the FBI. These figures show the conception that the government wants marijuana to have. The laws for marijuana vary from state to state. Groups such as the Physician's Association for AIDS Care, Norml, and the National Lymphoma Foundation argue that marijuana should be legalized in order to treat terminally ill patients. Among them are AIDS victims who find that marijuana stimulates their appetites so they can fight off dangerous emaciation. Glaucoma sufferers who have used marijuana said it has prevented them from going blind. A cancer patient could be using marijuana for alleviating unbearable pains from chemotherapy. Legalization of marijuana would benefit the federal budget in two ways. First, the federal revenues would increase because marijuana cigarettes would be taxed at the point of sale, and also the companies that make the cigarettes would also pay income taxes. Second, there would be a reduction on the amount spent on law enforcement efforts to apprehend and prosecute users and sellers of marijuana. The lead character, Adam, is obsessed by food and cooking. She sets out to cook over five hundred recipes in the three hundred and sixty days in a year which is logically impossible. Adams is employed in a very busy firm where she serves at the call center; possibly she is free on the weekends. This is coupled to the fact that some of the recipes she intends to prepare are very complex and will require a lot of time to complete (Penz and Andong 210). This way, Ephron easily develops a conflict from things that people have and still consider hobbies. Adam gets literally torn apart by the amounting pressure. The recipes are expensive and eat into her finances. The pressure from work coupled with her funny social lif e does not let her settle down to follow the recipes properly. She thus ends up spoiling most of them which is really a waste given the fact that she invested in them. She wines and complains most of the time, a feature that Ephron further uses to create humor. She is a fully-grown adult but the voice she posses can easily pass for a twelve year old. Ephron further uses the structure of the society to add to the humor; marriage is a very sacred institution in which religious adherents believe is ordained by God. Everyone is therefore aware of the institution’ existence and understands how basic it is in the creation of a peaceful and cohesive unity in the society. However, despite the peace that the bible and other holy books preach, families have structural problems some of which are humorous. The play addresses some of the rib cracking decisions that people make in life and how they are later humorously solved. Adam’s obsession with her cookery irritates her husband who tries so much to appear supportive. In a show of love and unity within their marriage, Adam and her husband visit a book fair in Paris where she meets food enthusiasts. The two shares a number of things which makes them develop quite a strong bond. The friendship between the women goes to the men who could have otherwise never noticed each other and they too became close. When Adam’s love for cooking turns into what her husbands calls an obsession, he leaves her. This has been the trend in very many families; when one partner irritates the other, the easiest way is normally to avoid them by possibly walking out of the marriage. Very few people sit down and address the issues in their marriages because boredom sets in among the married very fast. Powell’s husbands considers himself very enduring for the time he spends with Her despite her wining attitude and her little obsessions that deny them time together.
